British rugby studs set the standard

PRESS RELEASE

11 September 2007

The Rugby World Cup got off to a flying start this weekend, and while there may have been a few cuts and bruises, a British Standard on rugby studs can help ensure that injury on the pitch is kept to a minimum.

Many of the England, Wales and Scotland fans following the matches over the next month may not realise that the precision of Jonny Wilkinson, Stephen Jones and Dan Parks’ kicks is echoed in the British Standards Specification for studs for rugby football boots.

The standard, BS 6366:1983, was prepared by the Personal Safety Equipment Standards Committee at the request of the Rugby Football Union.  It contains test procedures to assess the likelihood of a stud becoming damaged in such a way that it may cause injury to other players, along with requirements for shape and size.

Among the test procedures detailed in the standard is the ‘Method for assessment of damage to studs in respect of injury risk’.  The test involves a simulated skin surface being subjected to a series of blows by the stud, which is attached to an impact pendulum.  The amount of damage to the simulated skin is then graded using a defined scale.

BS 6366:1983 is just one of around 27,000 British Standards which make life safer, healthier and easier for the consumer.
